Partners from 5 regions have identified the potential of connecting new and emerging nanomaterials and clean technologies with natural heritage protection in order to address environmental and economic problems. Through TANIA, they are supporting the wide and effective application of nanotechnologies for remediation of contaminated soil and water.
The partner regions are relative newcomers to the concept of nanoremediation. TANIA utilises interregional exchange and active participation of stakeholders from the environmental and innovation fields to address this limitation.
The Päijät-Häme region hosts one of the largest clusters of companies focused on Clean Tech and Green Tech. The Lahti Science and Business Park is home for one of the largest environmental analysis laboratories in the Nordic countries. Both the University of Helsinki Department of Environmental Sciences and relevant sections of the Lahti University of Applied Science are also located in this park. Additionally, the region lays claim to several knowledge intensive growth drivers such as an abundance of small and medium sized and large businesses focused on the bio economy and clean tech, including waste management, as well as strong support for institutional innovation promotion and management and a tradition of Triple Helix cooperation in R&D of contaminated soil treatment and waste management.
Regional Council Päijät-Häme will focus on policy design, implementation and monitoring. RC Päijät-Häme will also benchmark good practices of managing and use of structural funds in other regions. The role of Regional Council of Päijät-Häme in the TANIA project is to facilitate implementation of new projects, change in the management of the policy instrument and change in the strategic focus of the policy instrument.
The participating countries are Finland, France, Greece, Hungary and Italy. The five-year long project started in January 2017, with a total budget of 1,2 million Euros.
