PSSD-PLANNING SYSTEM FOR SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
This
European Union Project involving three countries has produced
GIS-based methods to meet the needs of regional and spatial planning.
The methods were presented together in the form of a toolbox on
the Internet for free unrestricted use for people involved in
similar work.
The final seminar of the PSSD Project, which was led and administrated
by the Regional Council of Päijät-Häme, was held
in Lahti in March, 2001. You are welcome to find out more about
the Projects results at the Internet address http://www.pssdtoolbox.net.

The
Project constitutes part of the Baltic Region Interreg IIC Programme
and lasted nearly three years. In addition to the South Finland
Regional Alliance formed by seven Regional Councils, also the
Region of North Jutland from Denmark, and seven research institutes
from Finland, Denmark, and Germany took part in the Project.
The PSSD Project developed GIS-based computer-aided methods for
spatial planning and development (e.g. preparing regional plans)
to make different kinds of thematic maps to meet the needs of
both planners and decision makers. The methods are intended for
promotion of sustainable spatial planning within the Baltic Sea
Region. They were developed to take into account socio-economic
factors and the natural environments requirements, and their
interaction.
The methods produced during the Project were gathered in an interactive
web database called the Planners TOOLBOX. Here, users may upload
map methods developed by themselves and other relevant material.
They are also free to download for their own use methods and data
developed by others. Solutions for shared map methodical problems
can be sought on the Planners TOOLBOX discussion forum.
Further information on the Project is available in the PSSD
Flyers (PDF) 1, 2,
and 3.
The PSSD subtask of the Regional Council of Päijät-Häme
consisted in the description of competitiveness indicators. The
results and the thematic maps of the co-project are available
in English at the Internet address http://www.paijat-hame.fi/pssd.
